| BACKGROUND
The Alexandra Chamber of Commerce herein referred to, as ALEXCOC
is a business support organisation committed to the empowerment
of local business in Alexandra and the surrounding areas. It was
established in 1999 because of the great need for local business
people to be represented in issues that affect their businesses.
Alexcoc draws support from both informal and formal business people
in the township. The chamber was established under one principle,
"love for Alexandra."
A dedicated group of people with a broader vision, in local economic
and social development revived ALEXCOC. The group had no offices
from which to run the affairs of the chamber, they volunteered their
homes to hold meetings until an office was negotiated with center
management. It is dedication and the will to see business people
in Alexandra being uplifted so that they can run their businesses
effectively drove the executive of the chamber. Today the chamber
is where it is because of the perseverance and sacrifice of each
individual in the executive. The current executive paid all the
debts, which were created by the previous executive to acquire offices
in the center.
There are problems regarding businesses that are owned by black
people especially in the township, black people run their businesses
from hand to mouth. The chamber provides a platform from which business
people can speak with one voice. Chamber membership comprises of
General dealers, contractors, retailers, and liquor traders who
are traditionally known as shebeeners.
The economic empowerment of business people in Alex is the keynote
address of the chamber to its members as they were previously left
out of the mainstream economy of the country, and are currently
struggling to impact in the economic upliftment. Through forging
of links with skilled business people and established companies,
Alexcoc hopes to facilitate the imparting of skills to the previously
disadvantaged business people.
Alexcoc is not only focusing on business people in Alexandra, it
is also assisting the province to revive Nafcoc branches. It has
facilitated a training of entrepreneurs; sixty people were trained
in Alexandra; forty in Ivory Park and hundred in Soweto. The graduation
of two hundred students was held on the 6th June 02. Standard Bank
sponsored the training.
