ALEXCOC PROJECTS
The organization through its subcommittees has engaged in quite
a number of projects, which are aimed at empowering its members
and create a financial base for the office workers. The projects
are as follows:
KWAZE KWASA (PTY) LTD

The above is registered as a (PTY) LTD so that it is operated as
a business entity and be able to sustain itself. The project has
after long struggle gained credibility from government institutions
such as the department of education and the local government regarding
the provision of services from the catering wing. Twenty youths
were trained as waiters and waitresses, some of them are employed
in the project and others were hired somewhere else.
The restaurant sells a variety of food to the community in Alexandra,
East Bank, Far East Bank, surrounding factories and schools around
the area. It is supported by Southern Sun Group, which offers skills
development and financial support. A sponsorship was received from
the South African Breweries to expand its operations and two other
projects, which are the Juice Project and Sewing Project.
SEWING PROJECT

The project like Kwaze Kwasa operates under the wings of the Women's
Forum. Its focus is on the training of women in the manufacturing
of clothes. A capacity training was provided by Eskom to twenty
women, who will be undergoing the technical training to advance
their skills. Some machinery will be provided by Eskom after the
training so that the women can start producing. Orders are already
coming in from schools and sports groups for uniforms.

JUICE PROJECT
This project was sponsored by SAB it has already started operating
some juice was produced and is being marketed in local shops.
GAUMAC (Gauteng Manufacturing Advisory Council)
Gaumac is a structure of DTI (Department of trade and industry).
Two executive members of the chamber were appointed to serve in
the council. Its aim is to establish a manufacturer's advisory center,
to assist small manufacturers regarding access to funds and acquiring
of management skills.
ALEXCOMMERCIAL (PTY) LTD

Is a business wing of the chamber which deals with constructors.
It is registered as a (PTY) LTD. This structure is used in terms
of tendering on behalf of constructors. It was involved in the building
of three classrooms at Kwabhekilanga High School. It will also benefit
the constructors in the redevelopment of Alexandra.

ARTS AND CULTURE
Arts and Culture department consist mostly of artists and crafts
people. It is divided into various arts disciplines i.e. music,
drama, visual arts, filming and video, literacy etc. It is linked
to the Kwaze Kwasa project so that artist can display their products
at the restaurant for tourist attraction, performances and exhibitions
will be held while African food is served in the restaurant.
The youth have already organized an event, which attracted 29 groups
to perform as a trial to follow up activities of the subcommittee.
These activities will motivate the youth and get them away from
the streets.
EDUCATION SUBCOMMITTEE
This committee consists of teachers from various schools in ALEXANDRA.
Negotiations were held between ALEXCOC, ISRAEL CHAMBER, and BOSTON
COLLEGE to train teachers in computer literacy. our members. About
three hundred teachers have been trained in computer literacy and
the course is still continuing until all the schools are covered.
There are plans to set up a sports academy between; ALEXCOC, ALEX
FOOTBALL ASSOCIATION, BOSTON and COSAS.
CHICKENS AND VEGETABLES
This project has been suspended because of lack of funds. The chamber
intends to negotiate with producers regarding acquiring of discounts
to members who will be involved in the project.
TEXTILE
Training will be held regarding upholstery, car seat manufacturing,
re-upholstery of chairs and sofas. This will in order to create
a project for people who re interested in this type of projects.
ALEXCOC ACTIVITIES SINCE 1999 - 2002
Trained three people in computer software and hardware, which was
sponsored by One Integrated Technology.
Fourteen people, 13 women and one male were trained in business
management skills sponsored by the department of labour.
Seven executive members trained in Entrepreneurial Skills sponsored
by Tsogo Sun.
Forty-Five priests from various churches were trained church management
skills by New Millennium.
Twenty women from Alexcoc Sewing Project were trained in capacity
building; technical skills are outstanding. Eskom sponsored this.
200 members from ALEXANDRA, SOWETO AND IVORY PARK were trained in
business management sponsored by Standard Bank while Alexcoc facilitated
the process.
300 teachers were trained in computer literacy. This was the results
of discussions between ALEXCOC, ISRAEL CHAMBER and BOSTON COLLEGE.
The training is continuing until all the schools are complete.
Eleven executive members are attending a three-year course sponsored
by Boston College.
